Does Shopify's Section 232 setting cover metals other than steel and aluminum?

Published ·
At a glance
Short answer
No — Shopify documents the Section 232 setting for steel or aluminum only, even though US Section 232 itself already covers semi-finished copper.
Field scope
Shopify documents the setting as the percentage of your products made of steel or aluminum.
Default
100%: leave it and tariffs are calculated as if covered products are entirely steel or aluminum.
One setting, whole store
A single store-wide figure for the steel or aluminum share; individual products cannot get their own percentage.
US shipments only
The percentage changes calculations for shipments to United States locations and no other destination.
Semi-finished copper is tariffed
Proclamation 10962 put semi-finished copper under Section 232 from August 1, 2025; Proclamation 11021 reset copper rates April 6, 2026.
What we read
Shopify changelog, the duties and import taxes help pages and Markets, read September 6, 2026.

Which metals does the Shopify setting name?

Shopify's duties and import taxes page sets the scope: shipments into the United States that contain steel or aluminum are subject to Section 232, and the setting asks how much of your products are made of these metals. The default is 100%, so covered products are treated as entirely steel or aluminum until you change it.

One store-wide percentage describes that steel or aluminum share across every product in your store that is subject to Section 232 — no per-product values — and it changes calculations only for shipments to United States locations and no other destination. The changelog announcing the field on October 29, 2025 names the same pair: Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs; where to change that percentage is a separate question.

Does US Section 232 itself reach other metals?

Yes. Proclamation 10962 brought semi-finished copper and intensive copper derivative products under Section 232 effective August 1, 2025, and Proclamation 11021 reset the Section 232 duty rates on copper effective April 6, 2026. Shopify's own tariffs explainer names copper as well — but as an exclusion from the separate Section 338 duty, not in the instructions for this field: goods already under Section 232 restrictions are excluded, and copper is on that list.

No official Shopify page we read — Shopify changelog, the duties and import taxes help pages and Markets, read September 6, 2026 — describes a separate field, percentage or mechanism for copper, brass or any metal other than steel and aluminum.

What to do when your metal is not steel or aluminum

For a copper or mixed-alloy product the setting has nothing to describe, so your duty figures come from a customs broker or a DDP provider rather than from the admin.

And even when the metal is the right one, a mixed catalogue still gets a single store-wide percentage, so it describes part of your range only approximately. That gap is a brokerage question, not a settings one.
